Two Boys Portrait

Before painting several edits were made to the starting photo. The original image was taken in a landscape format and included much more of the beach and several other beach combers. These additional figures were painted out and a much closer image crop decided upon. Portraits with a little bit of context always work well and the body boards in this painting really helped bring out the colour and fun of the day.

Good photos make for great portraits. The more we can see in terms of detail from the original image the better the portrait will be. This portrait was taken from a close up photo of the subjects head and shoulders allowing for particularly good detailing on the beard for example. The rich red background was also chosen to complement the portrait.

As you can see the original photo for this painting was an old black and white image in less than perfect condition. We were able to remove the scratches and folds through a bit of artistic licence and bring back to life this family scene. With increasing interest in family history paintings from old photos can make great gifts.
