Comic Portraits

Our comic style portraits are unique, hand drawn illustrations which are then coloured and printed on artist grade canvas. The colours are vibrant, the designs are fresh and funky and the option to add in your own text is the icing on the cake. The image to the right shows a photo of a finished canvas.

How we create them

Our graphic artists work mainly in illustrator (a fantastic vector graphics program) and draw each design using graphic tablets and pens. These allow you to work as if using a normal pen and paper but with all the benefits of the digital world. We first decide on a crop from your photo and for our comic portraits a close up shot of the head/shoulders tends to work the best. We then sketch in the outlines of the design and finally colour the image. You will then receive a proof example of your Pop Art Comic design via email, often with various different colour backgrounds for you to choose from. Just let us know which of the designs is your favourite and we then print the design directly onto cotton canvas. This gives a create feel and finish to the print and once stretched over our deep sided stretcher frames your Pop Art is ready to deliver.

Comic Portrait Design and Delivery Timescales

Remember that someone has to draw your design so please give us as much notice as you can when ordering. Usually the design phase takes 1-3 days and the printing/delivery another 10-14 days. We can ensure we hit specific short deadlines if you have them - just let us know when ordering.

Speech and thought bubbles

Comics traditionally had three ways that they could deliver text. In a thought bubble (rounded edges and linked by smaller bubbles to the thinker), through a speech bubble (normally a single oval shape with an attached spike leading to the talkers mouth) or via a narrative box (a rectangular box placed at the top or bottom of the panel where a story can be described). We are more than happy to work with you to add any of these into your Pop Art Comic Portrait.

Finding the right text

This is the point that people normally have an extreme attack of writers block. To help ease you through this difficult time we often suggest that if you can't think of anything go back to the basics. Is there a film or piece of music that the subject likes? If so are there any lines or quotes that you could use from them. The IMDB (An amazing movie database if you have never come across it before) has tons of quotes - you may have to dig around for a while but your patience will be rewarded.

Finding the right photo

As we draw every Pop Art Comic Portrait from scratch it does allow us to add a bit of artistic licence. We can therefore normally produce this style from smaller photos than we would normally accept and turning black and white images into colour isn’t a problem. If you can find a fun photo we’ll promise to transform it into a fantastic comic design.
